Record for Passenger Movements

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has just recorded an annual total of 343,581 passenger movements for the 12 month period ending 24 November 2012. This is a new record eclipsing the 327,705 figure for the period ending 30 June 2012.

The passenger numbers increased by some 12% compared to the same period ending November 2011. Airport Manager Neil Weatherson said, “This is a great result for the airport and bodes well for a strong year with passenger numbers expected to top 360,000 by the end of June 2013.”

“The continued strong growth in airline capacity and new destinations, such as Newcastle, has continued to assist the local tourist industry by filling beds that would otherwise be empty.

“Tourism Research Australia have recently released their Regional Tourism Profiles for 2011/12, with good news for Ballina Shire. Ballina has ranked third for both domestic overnight visitors and international visitors to the Northern Rivers NSW region” said Ballina Shire Council’s Tourism Coordinator Caroline Klose.

“We also have some surprising results for our average night stay, which has increased to four nights (up from 3.2 nights) for domestic overnight visitors. This means we are attracting not onlymore visitors, but they are staying longer and generating greater economic benefits to our business community” Ms Klose added.

Mr Weatherson concluded, “We should see continued growth in passenger numbers through the holiday period and beyond with additional airline services planned for the Sydney route commencing in April. This growth will provide four daily jet services to Sydney, three daily Rex services to Sydney and two to Newcastle, and three weekly jet services to Melbourne.”
