Airport Overview

The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is owned, operated and managed by the Ballina Shire Council. It is the principal airport for the Far North Coast of New South Wales.

The airport supports a number of Regular Public Transport (RPT) services and a variety of general aviation (GA) activities. These activities are in keeping with the increasing demands of tourism, passenger traffic, general aviation and commercial development opportunities

The airport operates 24 hrs a day and handles aircraft movements of around 20,000 per annum. The terminal  building has a capacity of over 500,000 passengers per annum.


Airport Management

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is a business unit of Ballina Shire Council. Management is responsible for the safe and secure operation, maintenance, commercial development and strategic planning functions of the Airport.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport manages the airport terminal building and public car park, all internal access roads, all runways, taxiways and aprons, visual aids and all serviced land at the Airport. It also manages the concessions and leasing activities at the airport and agreements and lease of land to relevant airport customers and stakeholders.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport provides the essential requirements of an airport operation in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner and endeavours to make a positive and leading contribution to the economic growth of the Northern Rivers region.


Airport Infrastructure development

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has a long term plan to increase passenger numbers and services offered at the airport. To ensure this growth, Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has and is investing in the following infrastructure upgrades and expansion:

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is the major transport hub for long distance travel to and from the Northern Rivers Region providing an integral link between aviation and tourism.

BallinaByron Gateway Airport is the largest ‘hard’ infrastructure or transport provider within the Region and increasing the capacity for additional services will contribute to the Region’s economic growth, population growth and employment.

According to the NSW Department of Planning (2008) the Northern Rivers is the fastest growing area in NSW with projections indicating 47% growth by 2036 compared with 33% for NSW. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is ensuring that infrastructure upgrades are undertaken and planned in-line with meeting the Region’s projected future growth.

Ballina Shire Council is responsible for the operation of the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport.

We have a good working relationship with key media outlets and will make every effort to assist news and film crews in obtaining footage and interviews with Airport Management.
