Expansion Project

The first stage of a multi-million dollar expansion of Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is now complete with official terminal opening taking place on 14th October, 2019 with The Hon. Ben Franklin MLC and Ballina Shire Mayor David Wright doing the honors.

The terminal works represent a $6.9 million investment in the airport shared by the NSW Government and the Ballina Shire Council, including $4.5 million under the Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

The expanded terminal accommodates more passengers in improved facilities, making the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport more attractive when it comes to seeking a greater number of flights to increase visitor numbers in the region. Increased flight numbers will assist local business growth and generate more jobs.

The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport Upgrade was delivered by Ballina Shire Council which contributed $2.4 million to the project.

Construction included works to increase the size of facilities in the terminal including the check-in area, departure lounge and arrivals hall. A new plaza area has also been constructed on the terminal forecourt to provide an improved set down – pick up area for passengers.

Ballina Mayor David Wright said the terminal upgrade complimented airside upgrade works undertaken in 2016. This was a $2.7 million project that received Restart NSW funding of $2.2 million, with the balance being funded by Council.
