New security screening equipment is now operational at the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport.
Body scanning equipment, which has been installed as part of the Airport Terminal Upgrade, will significantly improve security and safety for travellers, airport staff and airline crews.
The equipment uses millimetre wave technology (about 10,000 times weaker than a mobile phone signal) to look for items that may be prohibited from air travel. Body scanners have been used in international airports across Australia for several years.
The new screening process is quick and easy, with each scan taking about 15 seconds. The more you remove prior to screening the simpler the process becomes. The new equipment will mean you need to remove boots, belts, scarves, hats, all items from your pockets including tissues, handkerchiefs and wallets.
Remember you still need to remove all laptops, electronic tablets, aerosols, and other items as directed by security screening staff and place them in a separate tray.
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport thanks all travellers for their continued cooperation throughout the security screening.
